About CardRoom
What this is
CardRoom is an educational encyclopedia of card games. It exists so a complete beginner can sit down at any table — family game night, a bridge club, a solitaire afternoon — and feel at home. We cover an expandable collection of popular and culturally significant games; we don't claim to include every card game in existence, and new games are added over time.
How we write the guides
- One clear version first.Card games evolve by region and household. Each guide teaches one widely played version, then lists genuine alternatives in a clearly labeled “Common variations” section. No single variation is presented as universal.
- Simplest playable explanation first.Terminology is introduced only when it's needed, always with a plain-English definition and a glossary to fall back on.
- Cautious history. The origins of most card games are genuinely uncertain. Where reliable history isn't established, we use hedged wording or leave it out rather than invent dates and origin stories.
- Honest practice opponents. Computer opponents in practice modes use simple, clearly labeled strategies, and they never look at your hidden cards.
Educational-use notice
CardRoom teaches rules and strategy for learning and social play. It contains no betting, no deposits, no cash prizes, and no real-money featuresof any kind. Where a game is traditionally played with wagers (like Blackjack or Poker), we use chips purely as score-keeping tokens to explain turn mechanics. Practice results here say nothing about your odds of winning money anywhere, and we'd gently point out that in real casinos, the house advantage means the odds are against you by design.
Accessibility
We build to WCAG 2.2 AA expectations:
- Full keyboard navigation with visible focus styles, and no forced time limits.
- Cards are announced to screen readers with full descriptions like “Queen of Hearts, face up, selected” — never by color or symbol alone.
- Live announcements for deals, turns, and results in tutorials and practice modes.
- A reduced-motion setting (and automatic respect for your system preference) that replaces animation with instant state changes.
- Touch targets of at least 44×44 pixels and layouts that work from 320px-wide phones up.
